High-Performance Lubricants for Extreme Sports

Deuthlon is a brand from Asia, created through collaboration between engineers and sports enthusiasts from Asia and Europe. The R&D team comes from tough industries: Offshore, Subsea, Marine, Nuclear Power Plants, and the Fishing Industry. The same lubricant requirements that apply to a drilling rig rotor under saltwater and constant stress have been transferred to the application field of fishing reels.

The result is a lubricant line that conceptually differs from most of the market. Unlike classic Reel-Lube brands that develop their oils based on standard industrial logic, Deuthlon has completely rethought the topic. Two specially developed and patented technologies in over 30 countries form the basis of the entire range.

The products are not only found in the fishing scene but are also popular among Ironman and triathlon athletes. Wherever every component must run reliably under extreme stress and in saltwater or dirty environments, Deuthlon has made a name for itself.

The Two Core Technologies: DUST-Shield and AQUA-Shield

The entire product line is based on two patented technologies.

DUST-Shield™

The problem with most standard lubricants: oil attracts dust and dirt. What was intended as protection becomes an abrasive paste over time because dirt gets trapped in the oil film. In a high-speed bearing, this acts like a slow grinding process.

With DUST-Shield, the lubricant is bound to the bearing instead of being freely applied. The active components adhere to the bearing raceway, and the excess is flung off during the first run. The result: an almost dry surface that hardly attracts dirt. However, the full lubrication performance remains in the bearings themselves because the lubricant film is bound where it is needed. The coefficient of friction drops to nearly zero, allowing the speeds to be increased accordingly.

AQUA-Shield™

Water and saltwater protection is a weak point for many lubricants. Deuthlon developed the AQUA-Shield technology, which is not only water-repellent but actively repels water. In tests, the oil film withstands a high-pressure water jet of 60 PSI at a distance of 1 meter.

Practically, this means: when casting in the rain, using saltwater, or rinsing the reel after a day of fishing, the lubricant film remains in the bearing. You don’t have to re-oil after every saltwater use. At the same time, the oil film actively prevents corrosion and rust formation because the water never reaches the metal surface.

The Four Core Products

The Deuthlon system consists of four coordinated products that together cover the complete maintenance of a reel.

Deuthlon Cast Lube

The Bearing Oil for Spool Bearings. Ultra-light viscosity, optimized for ceramic and high-speed steel bearings. Contains PTFE for minimal friction, with DUST-Shield for dirt repellent properties.

Effect in use: noticeably longer casting distances, quieter running noise, reduced starting resistance when casting. Cast Lube also acts as an emergency rust remover: if a bearing is stuck, a drop of Cast Lube can make the bearing operable again without having to disassemble it. Practical by the water when the season starts and the reel doesn’t want to work after winter.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease + Ceramic

The Main Gear Grease with Ceramic. For the main gear and pinion of your reel, i.e., the transmission path from crank to spool rotation.

The ceramic particles fill microscopic irregularities on the gear surface and reduce wear between the teeth. Special feature: the grease also adheres to already worn gear surfaces where standard greases simply slip off. Those who want to restore an older reel to smooth operation often find the decisive advantage here.

Deuthlon Power Drag Grease + PTFE

The Brake Grease for the Drag System. Unlike most drag lubricants, this not only reduces friction but also improves the drag characteristics.

With PTFE content, the grease provides a smoother drag start: no jerk at the first brake application, but a smooth engagement under load. Especially important for big fish, where a sudden drag start can overload the line or pull the hook out of the mouth. It also increases braking power at the same setting because the PTFE layer transmits brake pressure more evenly.

Deuthlon Semi-Fluid Grease + PTFE

The all-round lubricant between oil and grease. For moving components that no longer need classic oil (too fluid) but also cannot tolerate thick grease (too heavy). Examples: worm shafts, knob bearings, drive shafts, small transmission gears.

The consistency is tuned so that the Semi-Fluid Grease forms a long-lasting lubricant film without slowing rotation. With PTFE content, it reduces friction like a thin oil but lasts like a grease over a long time.

The Starter Kit

For beginners, there is the Deuthlon Starter Kit: all four products in 10ml size plus a needle applicator for precise application. This gives you the complete maintenance equipment for one or several reels, depending on usage intensity.

Important Application Notes

Deuthlon lubricants should not be mixed with other lubricants. The brand itself recommends:

• Completely remove the original grease before application (using a suitable degreaser like isopropanol or bearing cleaner). Residual traces of the original grease would impair the properties of the Deuthlon product.
• Use sparingly. For Cast Lube, one drop per bearing is enough. For the greases, a pea-sized amount is sufficient for most applications.
• Do not mix with WD40. WD40 is a strong solvent and can destroy the specific properties of Deuthlon products.

Those who want to perform maintenance themselves also need a pin remover for the spool bearings and a bearing cleaner to degrease the components before re-lubrication.
