Cal's Custom Built Reels is a family business from Fallbrook, California, founded in 1987 by Cal himself. What started nearly 40 years ago as a specialized custom reel service for big-game anglers on the American West Coast has evolved over the years into a brand whose grease is now the worldwide industry standard in saltwater reel tuning.
The story behind the grease is classic American and straightforward: Cal spent years in his workshop modifying and servicing Penn International and Shimano Tiagra reels for tuna and long-range anglers. During this time, he developed his own grease that withstands the demands of saltwater, works in the drag mechanism, and simultaneously endures the high stresses of big-game fights. What began as an internal workshop solution was eventually discovered by reel manufacturers and incorporated into their own production.
Cal's Reel Grease is now used in at least 11 saltwater, freshwater, and fly-fishing reel manufacturers’ factory assemblies. Two of the best known: Accurate Fishing and Okuma, both use Cal's Grease as standard in all their reels. This means the grease is not an optional aftermarket maintenance product but is already installed in many anglers’ reels from the factory without them knowing it.
This widespread industry adoption is also the best credibility confirmation a lubricant can get in this sector. Manufacturers make their grease decisions based on strict criteria: heat stability, durability, corrosion protection, drag characteristics. Cal's has prevailed over major industrial brands because the grease excels in exactly these areas.
Cal's Universal Reel Grease comes in two main colors, each covering a different application area.
The original. Light beige grease with the classic Cal's formula, produced unchanged for decades. When anglers talk about "Cal's Grease," they usually mean this variant.
Application area: Drag washers, worm shafts, main gears, spool shafts, general reel lubrication. Works equally well on saltwater reels as on freshwater baitcasters or spinning reels. Known for its smooth drag properties: the brake engages without jerking, holds steady under load, and prevents heat buildup even under prolonged pressure from a big fish.
The consistency is medium-firm; the grease stays where you apply it without running off. Even after long storage, the oil does not separate from the thickener. Visually, the original is recognized by its characteristic tan/light beige color.
The newer variant that Cal's developed in addition to the classic Tan Grease. The Purple Grease is optimized for colder climates and lighter reels. At low temperatures, the grease remains supple, whereas the original Tan can become somewhat stiffer.
Application area: Light-duty reels, BFS setups, freshwater baitcasters, spinning reels in the UL range, fly reels. Also perfect for anglers in northern Germany, Scandinavia, or generally for winter and ice fishing where the classic Tan Grease can become too firm.
The Purple variant is thinner than the original, making it easier to turn but less suitable for heavily loaded big-game drag systems.
Cal's Grease is designed as a "Universal Reel Grease," deliberately versatile. Specifically, it is used for:
Important: For spool bearings in baitcasters, Cal's is not the right choice; there you need a thin casting oil. Cal's is the grease for all components outside the high-speed spool bearings.
Three points define the brand:
Proven formula: Cal's Grease has remained unchanged for decades. No constant formula changes, no marketing innovations. What worked on the first Penn International still works today on the latest Shimano or Daiwa.
Industry validation: When a lubricant passes the test with 11 reel manufacturers and is used in factory assembly, you as an end user can trust that the product works.
Easy application: Cal's is not a high-performance specialty lubricant for a single application but a robust all-round grease. You don’t need chemistry knowledge to use it correctly. Apply, work in, done.
Cal's Grease should be used sparingly. One to two pea-sized amounts are enough for most maintenance jobs.
