The right crank knob (knob) significantly influences the grip feel, control, and comfort while fishing. Depending on the fishing technique, reel size, and personal preference, a different knob may be more suitable.
Knob size is usually specified by the diameter at the thickest point – not by the length. This diameter determines how much contact area your hand has with the knob.
Typical use: BFS, finesse, ultralight baitcasters
Typical use: allround baitcasters, zander, perch, pike
Typical use: pike, larger lures, stronger reels
Typical use: bigbait, large swimbaits, saltwater
Basically, larger knobs can also be mounted on smaller reels as long as the fitting matches. Technically, this is often possible.
However, you should pay attention to choosing a knob size that makes sense for the reel. A very large or heavy knob can significantly accelerate the crank due to its own weight and the resulting centrifugal force, more than some light reels are designed for.
Especially with very light baitcaster reels, BFS reels, or finely built gearboxes, a knob that is too large can increase the load on the mechanism. In the worst case, this can lead to more wear or even damage to the gearbox over time.
Therefore: just because a knob can be mounted does not automatically make it the best choice for the respective setup. For small and light reels, it is advisable to opt for light and appropriately sized knobs.
Here is a quick guide to which size fits which setup:
Ultimately, choosing the right knob is always a matter of personal grip feel. Many anglers prefer larger knobs for more comfort, while smaller knobs offer more direct feedback from the reel.
The SLP Works Power Square Cork Knob is just right when you want to do more than just turn the reel handle—you want to work it. The angular shape gives you more pressure on the grip, while the natural cork material provides a warm, comfortable feel, and that’s exactly what makes the difference during long sessions. 🎣
Many standard knobs are either too smooth or too small, and that’s when you simply lose control during the fight. With this SLP Works Cork Knob, you get significantly more grip, while the shape allows you to apply real pressure without the knob feeling uncomfortable.
At about 48 mm in length, this knob clearly falls into the Power Knob category. It gives you more leverage and thus more control, while the cork material pleasantly dampens vibrations and still provides enough feedback.
Sits cleanly on current Daiwa setups, no hassle.
For the smooth operation itself, the Core Knob Bearing Set, 4 pieces is the best choice because it reduces friction and gets the maximum out of the knob.
Pro tip: Don’t tighten the screw too much, because especially with power knobs you’ll immediately notice if the operation is being slowed down.
If you need real pressure when cranking and don’t want slippery standard knobs, then the SLP Works Power Square Cork Knob is exactly the upgrade for you. Combined with bearings and cap, it becomes a setup that simply feels much better, and that’s what counts on the water. 😎
